net_condition: art and global media (netz_bedingung: Kunst und globale Medien)

About the Catalogue: net_condition
An extensive catalogue, documenting the exhibition, will be published in English by MIT Press in spring 2000.
net_condition: art and global media
The relationship between technology and the social construction of reality is pivotal to any analysis of contemporary media. Shifting from print to screen, the 'space' of media has evolved a global scope that dominates political and physical and social space. In a very real sense, we are all becoming inhabitants of information space.
The world wide web is, indeed, the epitome of the process of media globalization in the information society."net_condition: art and global media" will be the first book to investigate the social, economic, political and artistic consequences of the these global media that envelop the planet with both their messages and their veiled historical genealogy including print, photography, journalism, radio, film, television, video, computers and its progeny the internet. From the arts of film, photography, or video to art in the on-line sphere, history, practice and theory have focused on the central idea that each new medium introduces new characteristics and conditions that are in certain aspects superior to previous media. Indeed, the emergence of a new medium imprints its conditions on the old media and thereby changes them.

The net is the latest link in a chain of media exerting its conditions not only on other media - since media are constructing reality - but on all aspects of society. The focus of this book is therefore to investigate the conditions being interposed by the net and to assess the emerging conditions in which forms of social communication, art and politics have been transformed and subjugated by the net.
Broadly viewed, the net is seen as an aspect of the blueprint of ubiquitous computing, as a universal tool of transforming local structures, in which an historical world - traversing from ethics to economics - was built into non-local structures. This implies a telematic horizon characterised by distributed virtual realities, shared cyberspace, multi-local net-games, on-line multi-user environments, where millions of users interact in virtualized info-spheres.
As a specific implementation of these processes, net.art, ranging from localized physical installations controlled by the net to sequences of events that are subject to events in real space, has become a forum for the greatest political utopian ideas and the socially-revolutionary hopes and emancipatory desires, from gender politics to economics.
The net_condition: art and global media book, to be published in cooperation between ZKM in Karlsruhe and steirischer herbst, Graz, and in conjunction with the international exhibition (involving ZKM, Karlsruhe, steirischer herbst, Graz, MECAD, Barcelona, and ICC, Tokyo), will provide a panoramic view of the history, theory and practice of telecommunications media (with a focus on the net) in the light of the work major critical writers like Manuel Castells, Edward S. Herman, Pierre Bourdieu, Peter Weibel, Claudia Giannetti, Siegfried Zielinski, Toshiharu Ito, and others, considering the political and economic issues and social, cultural, and artistic practices in the age of global consumption, communication, production arising in the net community.
